About Shelby

Dr. Shelby Doyle is a scientist, inventor, and science communicator.

Shelby earned her Ph.D. in biological engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under Dr. Angela Koehler at the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. There, she led interdisciplinary teams that developed chemical tools for modulating transcription, resulting in multiple papers and patents, and contributed heavily to the external communications and fundraising efforts needed to support this research.

Throughout her wet-lab career, Shelby simultaneously trained as a technical communication coach and educator with the MIT Communication Lab. As a senior fellow and advisor, she led numerous projects in curriculum development, community outreach and strategic partnerships, including projects that led to the dissemination of the Communication Lab method at peer institutions and new programs to train scientists in political advocacy around science issues.

Recently, she led the Center for Microbiome Informatics and Therapeutics at MIT, managing a portfolio of basic research projects, investigator-led clinical trials, and STEM education programs in microbiome research. In this role, her efforts resulted in dramatic improvements to institutional alignment, revenue planning processes, program structure, patient stakeholder outreach, brand messaging, and fundraising strategy.

Throughout her career, Shelby has honed her skills as a science communicator through many years of coaching scientists in effective communication, as well as through her own praxis as a scientist, research executive, and science advocate. With 10 years of experience at the intersection of STEM education and innovation, Shelby now offers communication coaching and consulting to innovation sector clients ready to make an impact.
